A team is defined best by how it responds after a loss. The Ball State University women's tennis team will have its first opportunity of the season at doing just that this afternoon.
Ball State went into its match against Indiana University last week with a comfortable 2-0 record, but was dominated for the entire match, losing by a score of 7-0.
The Cardinals' chance at redemption will come today against IUPUI at the Muncie Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.
Coach Amy Behrman said a break of 10 days since Ball State's loss to Indiana will prove advantageous in today's match.
'I think we will be alright,' Behrman said. 'We've totally recuperated and have had eight full days of practice, so I'm confident we'll do our best.'
One area the team will try to focus on improving is the points gained from doubles play. While the team's singles record stands at a fair 10-8, the doubles teams currently sport a 3-6 record.
Behrman remains confident that the record will improve.
'I'm hoping we can start winning some doubles points starting this week,' she said.
IUPUI heads into the match with a three-game losing streak to start the season. Despite its team record, freshman Hunter Bullock has shined for the team, winning all three of her singles matches at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Bullock was also named the Summit League's women's tennis player of the week on Tuesday.
Today's match will also be one of the few times all year Ball State has more experience than its opponent.
IUPUI's program is littered with youth, as no upperclassmen are on the roster, which includes two sophomores and seven freshmen.
Ball State, meanwhile, is also fairly inexperienced with no seniors on its roster, but has three juniors to rely on for leadership.
Behrman, a rookie college coach herself, said she's felt comfortable in her position since she first began as interim coach on Jan. 11.
'As far as being on the court, I'm feeling very comfortable,' she said. 'We've come out strong and with enthusiasm in every match, and I'll think it'll stay as the season continues.'
