Senate committees need more professional representation

The chairperson of University Council said voting to ensure professional personnel sit on various council committees was the initial step toward a larger goal.

Laura Helms is the University Council chairperson and a member of many boards within University Senate.

She's among several people who serve on the Faculty Council and Senate Agenda Committee, and this is an issue she and others within University Council would like to address. But first, they addressed the dwindling number of professional personnel on various council committees.

The Faculty and Professional Personnel Handbook for this school year defines a professional personnel representative as a person "elected by and from each professional area, for staggered two-year terms." It goes on to say, "The electorate in each unit shall be the professional personnel on tenure, tenure-track or continuing contracts. Faculty with primary assignment in one of the professional areas shall be defined as professional personnel."

Recommendations by the Task Force on Professional Personnel were approved by University Council. These recommendations must be reviewed and voted on by the Senate Agenda Committee before they can be amended in the handbook.

Ten University Council committees were affected by these recommendations.

Other Items discussed at the meeting:

A representative from Financial and Budgetary Affairs Committee gave an update about the committee's meeting Jan. 27.

Governance and Elections Committee passed legislation to eliminate the "reply all" option during correspondence regarding electronic meetings.
