The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County has a new scholarship available for education majors.
The Janice Page Hughes Scholarship is for Delaware County residents specializing in special education. Students must be in their third year of study to qualify.
Suzanne Kadinger, program director for the community foundation, said the scholarship was funded through the estate of Junette Sue Hughes Chance, whose daughter with special needs died in 1992.
Similar scholarships through the same estate are available from the Henry and Madison County Foundations.
"The funds were left to three communities and each will design their own programs," she said.
Because this is the first year for the scholarship, Kadinger said she is not sure what financial award will be attached. The selection committee has $6,000 available, but it could decide to split the money between multiple applicants or hold some of the funds back for another year.
Applications are due by March 5 and can be found on the community foundation's Web site cfmdin.org
