DN Weekly Awards

Each week, The Ball State Daily News sports staff picks its PPQ — the player, play and quote of the week. And, with the help of our online readers, the weekly fan choice is also featured.

Here's this week's best:

Player: Janae Taylor, track
Taylor, a sophomore, earned three first-place finishes in the Ball State track team's performance Saturday at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational. Though the meet wasn't scored team-wise, individual performances such as Taylor's certainly stood out. Taylor won the 60-meter dash (7.77) and the 200-meter dash (25.64) and was the anchoring leg for the first place 4x200 relay team (1:44.33), joined by teammates Eric Campbell, Sharise Logwood and Ra'Jae Marable.

Play: Jarrod Jones, men's basketball
For the second time in three games, the Ball State men's basketball team headed into overtime, this time in Sunday's game at Ohio University. With the Bobcats leading 66-65 with 13 seconds left in the overtime period, the Cardinals forced a five-second call on Ohio, which was trying to pass the ball in-bounds to secure the win. Then, when 2.1 seconds left, point guard Randy Davis found Jones in the paint for a spinning lay-up right his right hand to put Ball State in the 'W' column, 67-66.

Quote: "That was as tough a call as I have ever experienced in my coaching career. However, I don't want that to be the focal point of the match. We had plenty of opportunities to capitalize and we just didn't pull it out." — Ball State men's tennis coach Bill Richards, explaining how Ball State was overruled calling a shot out on a point that would've won the doubles point for the Cardinals in their 5-2 loss at Purdue.

Fan Choice: Terrence Watson, men's basketball
Watson, a senior forward kept Ball State breathing when things were looking bleak in its 66-65 overtime win over Ohio on Sunday, collecting a career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds. His performance was the first time since Jan. 29, 2005 that a Ball State player (Terrance Chapman — 24 points, 16 rebounds vs. Eastern Michigan) had at least 20 points and 15 rebounds.
