Ball State student gallery re-opens Monday

Art students will have the opportunity to display their work at the L.A. Pittenger Student Gallery after it was closed a semester for renovations.

The gallery had been under the administration of several faculty members in past years. However, this semester it will be run by the Fine Arts League, an academic art club for students studying under all art disciplines.

Hannah Barnes, academic advisor for the Fine Arts League, said she thought Ball State students should take advantage of the gallery, as it's the only place devoted to art students.

She said although the gallery on the second floor of the Art and Journalism building is for students, disciplines besides photography almost don't have the opportunity to display their work.

'I want this to be a student gallery,' she said. 'I would like this gallery to become a place where students can have a voice.'

Different exhibits will display monthly, and students from the Fine Arts League will have the responsibility to organize the displays.

Jonathan Strong, secretary of the Fine Arts League, said having the gallery run by members of the club will give art students more experience as they will be in charge of planning, organizing and changing the displays every month.

'It gives us responsibilities and the experience necessary,' he said. 'In this gallery we'll be doing jobs we'll do as professionals.'

Cat Lynch, president of the Fine Arts League said she wants to see more art students participating at the gallery this semester.

'I would like them to see the space and realize that they have a place where they can display their work,' she said. 'I want them to use that space.'

The Student Gallery is located on the first floor of the Student Center.

An opening reception will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
