Students majoring in athletic training will have a stronger degree after the Board of Trustees voted to give the program a promotion.
Ball State University has changed the athletic training degree from a bachelor of art or science to a bachelor of athletic training, according to a press release.
The board approved the decision to maintain accreditation standards with the National Athletic Trainers' Association at its meeting Friday. Provost Terry King brought the issue to the board's attention, according to the press release.
NATA requires students to graduate with a degree in an athletic training program rather than a bachelor of art or science in order to be properly prepared to enter the professional realm. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, NATA will only allow students from an accredited degree program to take the certification exam to become a licensed athletic trainer.
The proposal now needs approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
