INDIANAPOLIS '- If the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team could chose where next month's Mid-American Conference Championship is, there is no doubt it would be in Indianapolis. The Cardinals are undefeated (7-0) and have a tournament win in Indianapolis this season, while being 3-5 outside of the Capitol City.
Ball State continued that trend Sunday, as the Cardinals won a five-team Circle City dual with 833 points. Youngstown State University was second with 493 points, Eastern Illinois University scored 375, Valparaiso University scored 271 and host Butler University was last with 139 points.
Ball State won 12 of 16 events, falling short in only the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes, the 200 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke. Alanna Bader, Jillian Bischoff and Katie Bylsma all had three wins on the day for the Cardinals.
Coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said she was impressed with how well her team did despite competing on short rest and because she put many of the swimmers in events they don't typically swim in.
'We decided to attack this meet with a different philosophy,' Seibold-Caudill said. 'I feel like we really came through. We thought of this more like day three or day four of the conference meet, by going on short rest and going up against a lot of teams. I proud of the way we performed today.'
While the meet was hosted by Butler, it was a homecoming of sorts for one Cardinal as the meet was held at her former high school. Senior and North Central graduate Emily Karwoski finished first in the 100 breaststroke in her return, the event that Karwoski still holds the record in at the school.
The Cardinals will next be in action Saturday when the team plays host to Ohio University at Lewellen Pool.
