With the game's outcome still in doubt, Kent State University received a big present from the Ball State University women's basketball team Saturday evening.
A rebound that got away from senior Danielle Gratton frustrated the senior guard. During the dead ball period, Gratton kicked the ball and was hit with a technical foul.
Moments later, a Golden Flashes' 3-pointer iced the game. Ball State was trailing by nine at that point and went on to fall 72-63 as the team's road woes continue. The Cardinals have also lost more Mid-American Conference games this season than all of last season, when Ball State finished 14-2 in league play.
How Ball State had arrived in that situation was simple. The defense didn't hold Kent State's offense down. Fouls piled up. Rebounds for Kent State also piled up.
Kent State out-shot Ball State 40 percent to 37 percent on the floor and grabbed 14 more rebounds, finishing with a 45-31 advantage on the boards.
Junior forward Emily Maggert finished with another double-double for Ball State. She scored 22 points and pulled down 13 boards as relief in the form of a home game will hit the Cardinals (9-9, 3-3 MAC) Wednesday as they play host to the University of Akron.
