Randy Heisler isn't happy.
After last Saturday's sixth place finish at the Bowling Green Challenge, the coach of the Ball State University women's track team has made it known to the team that a poor performance isn't acceptable.
'I don't go in hoping to finish middle of the pack. Does anybody?' Heisler said. 'I'm an optimist and a romantic, and I think we'll win every time we go out and compete.'
Heisler said there was a number of reasons why the team failed to meet his expectations, saying in particular that a number of the girls grew out of shape over the winter break.
'We were fine during the finals week, but to do nothing since then isn't good, and some of them did nothing,' he said.
Improvement from last week's showing will start this Friday and Saturday at Bloomington, where the girls will compete in the Gladstine Invitational. So far, practice this week in preparation for the meet has been mostly encouraging, according to Heisler.
'Monday's practice was not bad, and Tuesday was a little better,' he said. 'The biggest thing the girls have to realize is that they're not as good as they thought they were, and learn how to push through that.'
Freshman MaryKate Mellen said the team has taken the responsibility upon themselves to put out a much better performance this weekend.
'We had a team meeting and everybody came together and pretty much decided that we needed to get better. So we'll go out this weekend and see what happens.'
Heisler echos that statement.
'I want the girls on the team who were recruited to come hear to run, to run. Bottom line.'
