Every student organization on campus has been invited to brainstorm ideas for relief efforts for the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti.
Student Voluntary Services will have an organizational meeting at 7 tonight in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 302. The groups will share and discuss ideas for Ball State University's Hope for Haiti on Feb. 5.
Hope for Haiti will be a conglomeration of various fundraising activities, sales and games, she said. WCRD has volunteered its time to provide music for the event, and Smith said she hopes a few of the student groups have corn hole or card tournaments as their fundraisers. The idea is to keep the event upbeat and positive, like a 'carnival-type atmosphere.'
The goal for tonight is to figure out how many organizations will participate and how.
'What we don't want to have happen is for a bunch of student organizations to put in applications and are doing the same thing,' SVS advisor Kathy Smith said. 'They're just kind of talking it through so they can have the very best thing the could possibly do.'
She said a few SVS members put together a committee to organize Hope for Haiti. SVS posted an open invitation for student groups on Ball State's Communications Center. Smith said she hopes at least 20 or 25 groups send representatives to the meeting.
'We'll take anybody that will come,' she said. 'We think there are enough organizations out there that'll come talk it through with us.'
Smith said all the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. She has spoken with members of Muncie's chapter and was assured that all the money Hope for Haiti raises for the Red Cross will go to Haiti relief.
SVS has also recently become an official Red Cross donation center. It was awarded that status Friday, she said. Students can donate at either of the two SVS locations on campus in the Art and Communications Building Room 402 or at 305 N. College Ave.
