With all the sports teams and club sports on campus, junior marketing major Ryan Morris realized that Ball State University was missing one of his favorite sporting events - triathlons.
Morris decided to change this and started the Triathlon Club. He first became interested in triathlons after years of watching his father train and participate in the event.
'My dad raced when I was a child so I traveled with him to different triathlons,' Morris said. 'As I got older, I started training with him and eventually got hooked. It becomes a lifestyle for you.'
The club's goal is to provide a social, supportive and educational community for new and experienced triathletes as well as provide the building blocks for a healthy lifestyle.
Morris said everyone at any skill level is able to join including faculty, staff and alumni with current recreation privilege cards.
A triathlon involves swimming, biking and running, but varies in the level of difficulty. The club normally will participate in Olympic distances, which is longer than a sprint triathlon and shorter than an Iron Man triathlon. The Olympics has a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run.
Members of the Triathlon Club will be able to participate in the Midwest Collegiate Triathlon Conference where they will compete against other collegiate triathlon organizations.
While competition is key to the club, it is about more than triathlons. The organization hopes to encourage involvement in multiple sports as well as volunteering and supporting other Ball State teams and athletes.
Morris said group training enhances the triathlon training experience because members will be able to learn new techniques from each other.
'Working in a group can push you to your full potential especially when people you are training with are better than you,' Morris said. 'One of my buddies is a much better runner than I am and I am a much better biker. We can push each other to the max while learning from each other.'
