SGA to update bylaws

Student Government Association is in the process of rewriting its bylaws in order to make the organization more effective on campus.

SGA Parliamentarian Devin Hillsdon-Smith said the bylaws won't go through an overhaul, but they will be updated. The last time they were revamped was about a decade ago, he said, and Cardinal Impact feels this will improve efficiency and effectiveness for future administrations.

The bylaws refer to duties of the slate, cabinet, caucuses and committees prevent members from performing their responsibilities to the best of their abilities. The changes are meant to clarify individual responsibilities and the legislative process.

The changes also would help fill the empty seats in the Student Senate, Hillsdon-Smith said. Many student organizations have the right to a seat on the senate, he said, but aren't active.

Hillsdon-Smith and the four members of Cardinal Impact have been working on updating the bylaws since the slate was inaugurated in Spring 2009. He said they welcome outside input and if students have any suggestions to make SGA better, they can go to Cardinal Impact's Web site and send the slate an e-mail.

'If students have any ideas, we work for them,' he said. 'The more students that can contact me, the better.'

He said that he hopes to have the final draft completed by March 3 or March 10 so it's finished by the time the new slate takes over and can start with the updated bylaws.
