Next freshmen reader narrowed to 4

Finalists for the Fall 2010 freshmen reader have been narrowed down to four books.

Associate professor of sociology Melinda Messineo said a committee made up of 17 faculty members, students, staff of the Housing and Residence Life and members of the community will choose a book that best gives incoming freshmen a sense of what they will be experiencing.

'The frame of the common reader is to give freshmen a feel for their first academic experience, challenging them to think ... and helping them create a connection with their fellow students,' Messineo said. '

The committee narrows its choices from more than 100 suggestions to three or four selections. They're looking for topics that incoming freshmen may not normally read and a book that faculty members could possibly incorporate into their lessons. They also look at being able to bring the author in to interact with the students who have read their book.
'
The four finalists for the 2010 reader include 'Gimp' by Mark Zupan, 'The Glass Castle' by Jeannette Walls, 'Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with his Mother' by Sonia Nazario and 'The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic and How it Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World' by Steven Johnson.

The committee will announce the winner Jan. 26 at its 'thank you' reception being held in the Art and Journalism Building in the studio room beginning at 4 p.m.
