With its match against No. 13 Ball State University later this week, the Loyola University men's volleyball team will open its season against a Division III team.
Loyola will play Carthage College at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Chicago to begin its 2010 season.
Loyola is 7-0 all-time against Carthage and swept the team in last year's season opener. In their seven pervious matches, the Ramblers have swept the Redmen six times.
After being eliminated in the conference tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season, Loyola was predicted to finish the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association in fourth place in the preseason poll. The team also received five votes in this week's national coaches poll and is listed at No. 17.
The Ramblers have four starters returning from last season's team, including senior outside attacker Kris Berzins. Berzins — the only Loyola player selected to the preseason all-conference team — led the team with 380 kills last season and is 181 kills away from having the 10th most career kills in program history.
Carthage has five starters returning from its 2009 team that finished 8-25 — with two of those loses against Ball State.
Following Wednesday's match, Loyola will play Ball State in conference home match starting 8 p.m. Friday.
