The process of adjusting to college basketball is still a work in progress for Ball State University swingman Myron Green. So far, the results have been favorable.
Over the past five games, Green has firmly inserted himself into coach Billy Taylor's rotation, averaging more than 22 minutes of playing time per game.
"I've been very impressed at the level he's been playing," Taylor said. "He got off to a little bit of a slow start as he made the transition from high school to college, but I think he's really playing well now. He's been consistent in practice."
That consistency has transferred to the game, where Green has averaged 4.4 points during the five-game stretch. In Ball State's 71-43 victory against the University of Toledo on Sunday, Green had three points and six rebounds. He also added three assists.
"It was a big win and it was our first MAC win," Green said. "It was a big thing to get back on track in the MAC."
Like the rest of the team, Green has struggled shooting from the field. His field-goal percentage is a mere 24.4 percent, but Taylor is happy he is getting to the charity stripe and converting those attempts.
"He's done a nice job from the foul line," Taylor said. "He's struggled finishing some drives to the basket. But he's going to draw those fouls and get to the free throw line and convert."
Green is shooting 81 percent on free throws.
Since his absence in the first two games of the season, Green said he has worked much harder in practice to understand what is needed to play at Ball State.
"I'm just doing everything that coach Taylor says," Green said. "I didn't really know what was going on a lot of times, so it took me a while to get used to everything that was going on."
Green is also trying to make the adjustment to the college game on the defensive end of the floor. Taylor said he has done a good job picking up the Cardinals' defensive scheme, but Green is still learning.
"I tried to take pride in it in high school," Green said. "Now it's a little tougher. I'm working hard at that."
Taylor is encouraged that the freshman will keep improving as the year goes on.
"I've been very pleased with the way Myron's been playing," Taylor said. "I'm hoping he'll continue to get better and better for us as he goes through more and more MAC games for us."
