MEN'S BASKETBALL: Former BSU assistant Tracy Webster named interim coach at DePaul

Webster was Cardinals assistant from 2000-2002

Former Ball State University men's basketball assistant coach Tracy Webster on Monday was announced as the interim coach at DePaul University, where he was also an assistant coach since April 2009.

Webster was an assistant under former Ball State head coach Tim Buckley from 2000-2002 — a stint in which Ball State won a Mid-American Conference West Division title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT.

Webster has traveled the college basketball scene since coaching at Ball State. Webster has since been an assistant in the Big Ten's Purdue University and the University of Illinois — including their 2005 NCAA National Championship runner-up team.

From 2007-2009, Webster was an assistant at the University of Kentucky.

Webster replaces former DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright, who was fired on Monday. Wainwright was 59-80 in his four-and-a-half seasons with the Blue Demons, including a current stretch of 22 straight losses in Big East Conference games.

DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto said in a statement that the rest of the season for Webster and DePaul (7-8, 0-3 Big East) will be spent improving the competitive spirit.

"My expectation for the rest of the season us that our kids compete," Ponsetto said. "That is not an unrealistic expectation. (Webster's) task ahead of him is that he's got to coach the kids up a bit and that they would be competitive."
