Local author to debut first epic fantasy novel

Pulling from episodes of childhood memory and make-believe, an Anderson native will debut her first epic fantasy novel at the White Rabbit on Friday night.

Kimber Grey, a self-employed graphic designer, waitress and art director, said the plot and characters for her novel 'Quietus' were largely influenced by 10 years of playing make-believe with her sister as a child.

Grey embraces fantasy with the main character of 'Quietus,' a half-shadow-master/half-demon named Ferremor. She said she was six or seven chapters into writing a book called 'Fallen Shadow' before she realized she needed to develop the characters more, so she set that aside and wrote 'Quietus,' which became the first in her 'Median Saga' series. She said it forced her to rethink the timeline, but she was able to get it done in two years.

'There are no less than 20 future books planned and in the works,' Grey said in a press release.

She said writing one book a year is a realistic goal since she will soon be working full-time at her self-owned business Graywhisper, writing her novels and designing computer graphics.

Grey said she's had a couple book signings at the White Rabbit before, but it was bad timing because students were on break.

'My best book signing yet has been 16 covers in a three-hour interval,' she said. 'If I get at least that many, I'll be happy.'

She said epic fantasy is an old genre and she hopes interest will shift back to fantasy stories.

For sophomore Kayln Jones, reading about fantasy is a way to get away from everything else.

'I live reality, so why read about it?' she said. 'Just because it's set in fictional places doesn't mean you can't connect to the characters.'

'Fallen Shadow,' the next book in the Median Saga is expected to come out Oct. 10.
