Ice coats Ball State sidewalks, streets

Several people around campus have fallen victim to this morning's ice storm.

Kent Bullis, director of the Amelia T. Wood Health Center, said the staff has seen at least five people with injuries caused by slipping on the ice.

A University Police Department employee said officers had responded to accidents on or around campus, but didn't know how many.

Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president for facilities planning and management, said maintenance crews started salting the sidewalks on campus at 5 a.m. However, they had to start again at 7 a.m. after rain washed it away and they weren't able to keep a lot of areas from freezing. He said maintenance crews are told when to come to campus on a situational basis.

'We had the worst timing as possible, as usual,' he said. 'So we just keep doing what we can do which is just putting salt down.'

The maintenance crews can usually salt the sidewalks effectively, Kenyon said, but that depends on timing and weather. Despite, the ice sheets in many areas on campus, Facilities Planning and Management didn't get any more complaints than usual.
