Snowy roads cause problems for motorists

The first snow has kept Indiana State Police busy this morning.

As of 11:30 a.m., state police spokesperson Sgt. Rod Russell announced troopers at the Redkey District, which includes Delaware, Grant, Blackford, Jay and Randolph counties, investigated 22 slide-offs, eight property damage crashes and two minor personal injury crashes.

"Light snow has caused bridges, under passes, exit and entrance ramps on I-69 and other state and U.S. highways to become slick, creating hazardous road conditions for motorists," Russell announced.

Driving safe in winter weather: Tips from Indiana State Police

1. Pay attention, hang up and drive.
2. Allow extra time to get to your destination.
3. Clear all windows of ice and snow and remove snow from hood, roof and head lights and tail lights.
4. Beware of bridges, underpasses, shaded areas and intersections where ice and snow is slow to melt.
5. Slow down to increase traction; don't use cruise control on slick roads. Avoid abrupt stops and starts, slow down gradually and keep wheels turning to avoid loosing traction.
6. Use low beam headlights to decrease glare from ice.
7. Buckle up.
8. Move over and slow down for emergency vehicles.
