Weather, flat balls deflate attendence

A participant dressed as Ash Ketchum of the TV cartoon "Pokémon" grabbed a ball early in a game of costume dodgeball Saturday afternoon in the Noyer Bowl.

But when it turned out all the dodgeballs were flat, it quickly turned into a freeze tag game to compensate.

The game, put on by Spectrum, Ball State University's gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight alliance, attracted around 15 costumed players.

High wind and cold weather deterred many from participating in the group's annual tournament, and most opted out of wearing costumes due to the damp weather, competitor Chris Rios said.

"I think we would've had many more people turn out to [Saturday]'s game if the weather would've been nicer," Rios said. "The game changed from dodgeball to freeze tag to a game called Infection, which is some kind of Humans versus Zombies game."

In the past, members of the Black Student Association and Asian American Student Association came out to form their own dodgeball teams, Spectrum secretary Jacinta Yanders said.

"We've done this event annually for as long as I've been in the group," she said. "Last year, Happy Friday Guy even came out to play with us."

After around an hour of games, exhausted participants retired from the game to grab lunch at Noyer. Spectrum members, although a little disappointed with the turnout, agreed that it was a Halloween tradition and the group would have it again next year, Yanders said.

Spectrum has already done many events since school started this fall, such as a National Coming Out Day picnic, a Drag Show and a vigil for Matthew Shepard Day. The group also has events coming up as well, including a musical production called "The Wiz" and Spectrum's Spring Week in April.
