Ball State University's chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society is sponsoring their second annual spelling bee contest.
Guy Crowder, vice president and secretary of the organization, said the event is to promote the Ball State chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society.
"We want to get the name out to the Ball State community," he said. "We want students to be aware and aspire to qualify."
Students can only be Golden Key International Honour Society members if they receive an invitation from the organization.
Crowder said spelling bee participants got two lists of words of easy and intermediate levels to study from. He said the excecutive board didn't want to make the word selection too difficult.
Crowder said about 24 students have registered to participate in the event, more than double of the number of students participating last year. He said an e-mail sent by the organization's advisor helped promote the event for this year.
"I think it will be successful," he said. "Hopefully a lot of people that don't know about Golden Key will attend and they will learn about us."
According to its Web site, the Golden Key International Honour Society was founded in 1977, and is an academic society that recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence among college students from all academic disciplines.
Crowder said student members of the organization have the opportunity to network or participate in one of the study abroad programs the organization has.
He said the Ball State chapter does several activities during the academic year to promote literacy. He said the idea of organizing a spelling bee contest came out from their emphasis on literacy.
"We are trying not to make [the contest] too hard," he said. "We want to promote literacy, but at the same time we want students to have fun."
