The first few hundred swine flu vaccines made available to Ball State University were administered successfully Thursday. Students had to wait only about five or six minutes and nobody was turned away for lack of doses.
This was the first wave of vaccinations to reach campus and demand wasn't so high that students were rushing the doors of the Amelia T. Wood Health Center and waiting in line for an hour. Students got in and three or four staff members made sure they got out quickly.
The Health Center handled the situation efficiently and it seemed to have a good system in place to effectively handle further shipments of doses.
The only people that were turned away didn't fit the criteria to receive the vaccine. Those who didn't qualify for Thursday's FluMist can get an injectable dose today. About 300 of those were delivered unexpectedly Thursday. The injections are set aside for those with chronic medical conditions or pregnant women, who may not have met the criteria for the first wave.
Kudos to students for not flowing into the Health Center in overwhelming numbers. Though one reason the vaccines didn't run out could be because students aren't too concerned about getting vaccinated. If that is the case, students should reconsider. The most important part of the semester is coming up and the last thing a busy student needs is to get sick in the middle of a project worth a large portion of his or her grade.
The next shipment of vaccines is expected to reach campus within about two weeks. Let's keep the same level of efficiency from the Health Center while getting students in and out quickly and the same level of calmness from students hoping to vaccinated.
As always, wash your hands, cover your mouths, avoid sick people and get vaccinated if you can.
