Kappa Delta happy about Twister Tournament turn out

Students danced and twisted at Kappa Delta sorority's "Twister Tournament" Friday night in Irving Gym II.

This tournament was a philanthropy event raising money and awareness for cancer. All proceeds from the tournament went to the American Brain Tumor Association.

The "Twister Tournament" was held in honor of Lindsey Arnold, a former Kappa Delta sister. Arnold died from a brain tumor in 2005.

There were six Twister boards for students to play on. Each winner from these six boards went on to the championship round.

This year's theme was "Spotlight on the Stars" and students were encouraged to come dressed as their favorite celebrity.

Ben Spieres, a junior sports administration major, came dressed as Green Man from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." He said he thought he had a good chance of winning the competition.

"I am very flexible in this costume," he said. "I like my odds."

Spieres said the tournament was a great way to promote awareness for this cause.

"I think it's a great idea to do an event like this for a sister," he said.

Robert Cory, a junior and member of Theta Chi, came dressed as a member of the Blue Man Group. He said his costume was a last minute idea.

"This was completely spontaneous," he said. "I searched Google for celebrity costumes, and I found the Blue Man Group."

Cory said he was the dark horse at the competition.

"It's been 10 years since I've played, but I think I'm coming with an upset," he said.

Josh Bryce, a junior and member of Sigma Chi, was dressed as Daphne from Scooby Doo. Although he could not participate due to the heels his costume required he thought he would win best costume.

Bryce said he thought this event was a great way to bring everyone together.

"I think it's awesome," he said. "I think it's when the greek community comes and supports something like this."

DJDJ, a local disc jockey, was playing music at the tournament.

Meghan Polender, a senior business administration major and member of Kappa Delta, said she thinks this event gets bigger every year.

"Each year we have more participation and the costumes get crazier each year," she said.

Polender said she thinks Kappa Delta will break its goal of raising more than $969 for the cause.

"We've seen a lot of support from the greek community," she said.

Kimberly Fox, the twister tournament chair, said she was happy with the turn out for the competition.

"Each year we have more people come," she said.

Fox said Kappa Delta did more advertising for the tournament this year. She said she expected to have more than $1,000 raised at the end of the tournament.

Fox said she was happy with the labor put in by each sister of Kappa Delta.

"I'm really proud of all the sisters and their hard work," she said.
