E-mail accounts to get more options

The Ball State University Communications Center announced changes made effective today to university student and faculty e-mail accounts.

Until today, accounts that were new since May 2009 and had the default option of "opt-in" will be changed to the option of "opt-out."

This means students will be subscribed by default to all categories of e-mails the university sends.

Students and faculty will receive an e-mail about the changes today and will have the option to unsubscribe from any categories they don't want to receive.

Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for University Marketing and Communications, said the change was made to reduce blacklisting, which peaked in May 2009.

"There is no magic formula to solve this," he said. "We've spent time trying to figure out how to fix the problem."

According to the Ball State Communications Web site, the launch of the Communications Center made it easier for offices to create and broadcast e-mail addresses. The university did not have adequate controls to regulate the volume of e-mails that were delivered to external providers. Ball State did not have the measures to authenticate Ball State servers as valid.

"There were times when no user could receive anything from the Communications Center or forward e-mails," he said. "It's a very serious problem for whom they are forwarding the e-mail."

Proudfoot said changing the default setting for the e-mail accounts will show students and faculty all the categories they have.

"Campus life is an important part of students' life experience," he said. "It ensures students to have access to every category on campus."
