Ball State dancers showcase skills

This weekend, senior dance majors and minors will put their best foot forward when they perform in the Senior Choreography Showcase. The recital will take place in Ball Gym Room 213 on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $5.50 to get in.

All of the dancers prepared for this competition starting in September when the seniors held their own auditions to choose their dancers. They then choreographed the dance and held their own separate practices with their dancers.

"It allows us to be exposed to another side of dance," senior dance major Sara Sandifer said. "We are used to just performing, so it is a wonderful experience to get to make up a dance that is your own."

Most are group dances with at least three dancers in the group, she said.

"It depends on what the choreographer is looking for," senior dance major Michael Humphrey said. "Sometimes a choreographer will showcase a piece with just two people or seven to ten people."
The type of dances performed are not necessarily the traditional ballet, Humphrey said. Modern and contemporary dances are mostly the ones showcased.

"My piece is a modern piece," Sandifer said. "The premise of my dance is domestic violence. Each of the six women are victims of violence. The whole piece is about finding the courage to escape these relationships. When I listened to my music, I just felt that it fit with the mood and story I was trying to portray."

She said each choreographer chooses their own music. In the recital, there will be a mixture of classical music and music with lyrics. Sandifer is using a song called "Legions (War)" by Zoe Keating. She said it is all cello with no words.

As with any activity, there are the good and bad.

"The worst part of dancing is messing up on stage or a dance performance not going the way you wanted it to," Humphrey said. He has been dancing since he was 16 years old.

Sandifer, who started dancing when she was three, said the best thing about dance is being about to let go of everything.

"Dance shows so much expression, and it is so wonderful to be able to tell a story through movement," she said. "Dancing simply makes me feel good. I love being able to entertain people with movement I am creating with my body."

The junior dance majors will also have a showcase during the spring, where they will get to showcase their own dance works.
