A timeline of President Obama's time in office

Nov. 4, 2008 - Barack Obama is elected as president of the United States. He won the race against Republican candidate John McCain by 192 electoral votes.

Jan. 20 - President Obama is sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. About 1.5 million people were in the crowd to watch the inauguration.

Feb. 9 - Obama travels to Elkhart, Ind. to discuss details of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. He flew back to Washington, D.C. the same day to give his first nationally televised press conference at the White House.

March 9 -
Obama overturned a ruling that limits how much federal money could be used for human embryonic stem cell research.

April 16 -
The Justice Department releases four memos revealing "enhanced interrogation methods" used by the CIA during the George W. Bush administration.

April 29 - Marks the 100th day of Obama's presidency

May 26 - Obama nominates Sonia Sotomayor to fill a spot on the Supreme Court of the United States. Sotomayor would become the first Hispanic and third woman to be appointed to the position.
June 15 - Obama visits the American Medical Association in Chicago and talks about the rising health care costs at the annual meeting.

June 17 -
Obama signs a memo that will extend some benefits to federal employees in same sex partnerships and announces several proposals to advance the country's financial stability.

June 23 - Obama discusses the nation's health care policy at a press conference.

June 27 - American troops in major Iraqi cities begin to be removed from the area.

July 15 -
A Senate committee approves a proposed plan to restructure the health care system, setting a milestone in Obama's push for health care reform.

July 17 -
Obama delivers a speech on the healthcare reform at a New Jersey fundraiser. He urged Congress to pass a national health care bill.

July 30 - Obama and Vice President Joe Biden host a "beer summit" at the White House. A Harvard scholar and police officer were invited to discuss racial issues in America.

Aug. 4 - Obama celebrates his 48th birthday at the White House.

Aug. 5 -
Obama visits Elkhart, Ind. for the second time as president to talk to the community about unemployment rates and the potential of new jobs being created.

Aug. 29 -
Obama gives the keynote eulogy at Senator Ted Kennedy's funeral at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Boston.

Sept. 21 -
Obama is a guest on the "Late Show with David Letterman." This was his second appearance on late night TV, after being interviewed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in March."

Oct. 9 - The president is awarded with the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

Oct. 28 - The Matthew Shepard Act is signed by Obama in the White House. The bill expands hate crime laws to include sexual orientation, gender, disabilities and gender identity.
