Works in Motion provides opportunity for all genres

The Ball State University Dance Department will continue a tradition that has been ongoing since 1987. On Friday, dancers of different genres and abilities will showcase their talents at Works in Motion.

"Works in Motion gives dancers an opportunity to perform and showcase the choreography they have been working on," dance professor Audra Sokol said.

She has been working on three pieces for the show. One of them is a dance specifically for the freshman dance majors. She started choreographing a freshman dance each year to give the freshman an opportunity to get to know one another and the process in the department better, she said.

Even though most of the featured dancers are majors or minors in the program it is not a requirement. Freshman dance major Heather Closson choreographed a dance with two friends who used to dance at her studio but are majoring in other subjects at Ball State. She will also be performing in five other short pieces.

Works in Motion allows students to dabble in any genre they please. Pieces range from hip-hop to ballet.

The setting for the show is very informal, saiddance professor Sarah Manglesdorf. It will be held in the Korsgaard Dance Studio on the upper floor of Ball Gym. Bleachers and floormats will be available for seating.

Admission is $1, and the show begins at 6 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the dance department to help pay for guest choreographers and other opportunities for the students.
