The toughest section of the Mid-American Conference schedule came to a close Friday night. Losers of the last four, the Ball State University women's volleyball team (10-14, 3-8) looked to rebound against MAC West leader Western Michigan University (17-9, 9-2).
After hanging tough early against the Broncos, the Cardinals fell behind in the first set. A 5-0 Western Michigan run busted the set open and provided all the breathing room the Broncos needed en route to a commanding 25-16 victory.
Ball State dropped both the second and third set victory 25-15 and 25-12 on the road in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Brandl led the Cardinals offensively with nine kills on the night. Senior outside attackers Julie Breivogel and Alisha Green added five kills each.
Senior outside attacker Elaina Kakatolis returned to the floor for the first time in a week after missing time due to flu-like symptoms. In her return, Kakatolis posted three kills on nine kill attempts.
Libero Alyssa Rio registered 10 digs on the defensive end. Libero Christie Waters tallied eight of her own in the back row.
Ball State's road trip continues at Northern Illinois University on Saturday where it looks to snap a five match losing streak.
