UPDATED: Film star, activist Olmos to speak at Pruis

Film and television star Edward James Olmos will be discussing his idea that humanity is all one race. Olmos' presentation is called "We Are All in the Same Gang."

The presentation will be at 8 p.m. in Pruis Hall.

He recently spoke at the United Nations about his idea of one race with several of his "Battlestar Galactica" castmates.

"We still think there are other races, but really within the human race are many different cultures," Olmos said.

Mitchell Isaacs, associate director of Student Life, said Olmos' message comes from more than 30 years of working in the cinema industry and from his charity work with Los Angeles gangs.

"The day that the indigenous peoples, the Latino community, and the Asian and African community have an equal understanding of their cultural contributions is the day we will have a real strong society and be whole," Olmos said in an interview last Tuesday.

Ball State is paying Olmos $25,000 for his appearance on campus. Isaacs said the university was able to afford this lecture because 10 departments, including the Teachers College.
