A crowd of students lined up along Riverside Avenue to watch the 29th annual Homecoming Bed Races at noon on Friday.
Jenny Pyle, Homecoming Steering Committee Bed Race chairwoman, said despite the initial bad weather earlier in the morning, attendance proved to be about the same as usual.
"The streets were completely lined up and crowded," she said. "[The crowd grew] once classes got out at 11:50 and [students] saw the beautiful weather."
The crowd watched 37 teams compete to win bragging rights as the winner of one of Ball State University's most popular Homecoming week traditions.
"It was a great way to spend a Friday, pushing a bed down the street in a tux," said Derek Wilson, a member of the winning University Singers team.
It was University Singers' second consecutive Bed Race win.
"There is a Secret Singers Strategy, the SSS," University Singers team member Nathan Wilson said.
Competitors dressed up in zany costumes to wear while racing. This year, themes included superheroes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cruella de Vil with Dalmatians and a team dressed up as the Jamaican bobsled team.
It was the women's rugby "Golden Girls" outfits that the Homecoming Steering Committee voted as the best costume. The team dressed up as elderly women and carried a sign with their team name and this year's Homecoming theme "Best Week Ever."
It was the team's sign that helped push them into the top spot because it incorporated the theme, Pyle said.
