'The Wedding Singer' comes to Emens

Feathered hair, break dancing, neon colors and 80s music are coming to Emens Auditorium tonight in a popular romantic comedy. The musical, "The Wedding Singer" is based off the 1998 film featuring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

"I love the movie; I've seen it like 40 times," freshman Claire Lefkowitz said. "I think I will like the show just as much."

Emens Auditorium director Bob Myers thinks the story line should be familiar to both the Muncie and Ball State communities.

"'The Wedding Singer' will be a light-hearted, fun musical comedy that both the student body and the public at large can enjoy," Myers said.

"The Wedding Singer" musical is different than the movie in just a few ways. There are different musical scores, and the cast brings a different feel to the characters.

"The basic tale of Robbie and Julia remains the same," Darcy Wood, Emens Marketing Director, said.

The show opened on Broadway in 2006. It has been on tour in many locations around the country since 2007.

"Usually when a tour heads into a second year of its national tour, it's a good sign that things are going well," Wood said.

The Emens Box Office has distributed 375 tickets to Ball State students so far and expect to sell 700 tickets before the show, Woods said. Students get into the production free because staff believed it would generate more interest.

"This show was selected in context of the time of year availability, appropriateness for our audience, and contrast to other events on the 2009-2010 Artist Series," Myers said. "We strive to package an appealing selection of events from what is going out on the road."

Tonight, students have the chance to see the show, not just hear about if afterwards.

"I wanted to see it when it played in Indy, but didn't get the chance to go," Lefkowitz said. "My friends said it was awesome."

Movie vs. Musical

Differences between the Broadway musical and the 1998 Movie:

- The musical includes all 80s-inspired songs, no covers.

- The costumes in the musical are a bit more wild in their 80s style.

- The main character Robbie Hart, played by J. Michael Zygo is more believable and sweet than over-the-top Adam Sandler.
