SWIMMING AND DIVING: Unexpected high scores not enough for Ball State against Toledo

Despite a team performance that coach Laura Seibold-Caudill could not have expected, the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team lost in its season opening meet against the University of Toledo, 155-143 on Friday at Lewellen Pool.

"When I saw some results from [Toledo], I didn't think our girls would be up to that challenge yet but our girls were hungry, and they were eager to get it done and they just went after it and I thought they did a tremendous job," Seibold-Caudill said.

Ball State was led by Sara Hostetler and Katie Bylsma who both won a pair of events. Ball State was able to win seven of the 16 events, which was more than Seibold-Caudill said she expected. She also said she expects Friday's results to be the base for the team to build on.

"We are well ahead of were we were at this time last year," Siebold-Caudill said. "I think our girls want it more this year. They want it and they are having a blast this year."

Senior Mary Ehresman echoed Seibold-Caudill on the performance of the team.

"We weren't expecting it to be that close," Ehresman said. "We were motivated. We weren't worried about what they were doing. We were just focused on what we were doing and our times which relaxed us."

The Cardinals host the Falcons of Bowling Green State University today. Seibold-Caudill said she thinks her team stands a very good chance against in the meet.

"We've got to want it more. We've been talking about Bowling Green a lot because I thought that we had a better chance to beat them," Seibold-Caudill said. "If we swim like we did tonight against [Saturday], I think we have a very good chance of winning."

Today's meet begins at 1 p.m. at Lewellen Pool.
