OUR VIEW: Uh...Hooray Fall Break?

AT ISSUE: The college gods saw fit to bless us with a whole day for Fall Break. Gee, thanks

We're about nine weeks through this semester. A few freshmen probably already have failed out of school by now. We're all tired, some more than others. The reading, writing, mid-term exams and, in some cases, intense partying are taking their toll of our mental stabilities.

What better time to have a break than this? The fall season is just starting, the leaves are turning beautifully into their vibrant reds, yellows and oranges and Ball State University's campus is as lovely as any time of the year. The comfortably cool weather has pushed away the muggy summer. The environment has relaxing qualities to it this time of year.

Unfortunately, Fall Break doesn't.

A three-day weekend is hardly a break. It's almost insulting to call it Fall Break when some schools get a whole week. A lot of other places at least get two days.

Upperclassmen rarely schedule Friday classes anyway. For a lot of people this weekend won't be any different than a normal one. They'll go on a Thursday night through Sunday morning bender and have class again Monday.

Break only helps those unfortunate enough to have Friday classes, mostly freshmen and sophomores. A break might be important for them as they may still be adjusting to the rigors and demands of college life. But 300 and 400 level classes are more demanding than most of what they'll be taking.

But if the university gave us another day for Fall Break, wouldn't it have to add another day of class to the semester? Yes, it will. In that case — two days for Fall Break — get rid of the terrible experiment that is Fruesday, turn it back to Tuesday and also have Wednesday classes. That would make Fall Break and Thanksgiving Break two days each.

Or, just get rid of Fall Break alltogether and stop insulting us. Four days for Thanksgiving Break would be better because we'd have enough time to relax and actually take a break.

As it is, one day barely gives us time to sleep in and go home for the weekend, especially for those who live farther than a few hours away. If we had two two-day breaks, the relaxation would be spread out, which may or may not be better, depending on whom you ask.

Either way would be better than Ball State giving us a stick of gum and calling it a three-course meal.
