Seriously, Fruesday is pointless.
Neither students nor professors want to be in class that day. Many professors don't take it seriously and subject students to menial work because they're required to be in a certain room for an hour or so that day. A lot of professors just cancel class and even more students skip in favor of getting a head start on the vacation.
University Senate Agenda Committee discussed getting rid of Fruesday on Monday. Please do.
Because we're talking about days on Ball State University's academic schedules that are pointless, get rid of Fall Break too.
Someone brought up eliminating the one-day Fall Break at the meeting to make up for the Friday of the week of Thanksgiving. Though we do appreciate the university's (lack of) generosity of a one-day break, it would be so much better to have a longer break for Thanksgiving. One day for Fall Break doesn't give students much of a chance to break if they need to travel a long distance home. Some students don't even notice Fall Break because they don't have Friday classes.
Thanksgiving is one of the more family-oriented holidays of the year. Some students probably prefer being here rather than home, but a lot of students don't hate their families and should have more of a chance to be home with them. One more day on a relatively long break is better than one day added to a seemingly random weekend.
We also just complained about Family Weekend being scheduled too close to Homecoming and Fall Break. If Fall Break was gone, Family Weekend could be pushed a few weeks between Homecoming Weekend and Thanksgiving Break. That would give more of a buffer between the events and maybe attract more parents and families for the two weekends.
Since we got that short bout of good football out of our systems, there's no worries about lack of attendance for a potential Thanksgiving Week football game. People would go even if they weren't gone for the week.
After the past two years of the Fruesday experiment, it's good that University Senate thinks it's time to evaluate its effectiveness.
