It can be reasoned with. Maybe it's not just an amalgamation of every Disney villain making our lives miserable for the sake of being evil.
The Parking Services that everyone knows and despises dealt with Student Government Association on Thursday to loosen its choke hold on campus parking for the weekend. SGA actually succeeded in negotiating a 3 p.m. lift on yellow, blue, green and red parking lot restrictions.
This is a victory, albeit small, for everyone who has ever rushed out of class, lowering their shoulders and sprinting through the crowd and knocking over the girl on crutches who broke her ankle the previous weekend, only to find a ticket under the windshield wiper and a parking officer walking away.
SGA made working with Parking Services a platform point during its campaign in the spring. While this certainly isn't an astounding victory, it chips away at the previously unwavering Parking Services and shows future SGA slates that they can reach reasonable compromises in the future.
Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said this is a test run and could eventually become normal for Homecoming and Family weekends. The deal also could lead to permanently reduced restriction times on Fridays or the elimination of other inconveniences for students, faculty and visitors to campus.
That being said, don't screw this up. We can't think of any way someone could cause problems for such a small change in policy and Burton even said he doesn't think this will stir up any complaints. But that doesn't mean we can't ruin this opportunity.
If this does somehow inconvenience faculty, staff or anyone, it could ruin the progress SGA made in the relationship with Parking Services. SGA vice president Mandy Mills said Parking Services was "extremely willing" compromise on the issue. Let's not ruin the sentiment.
This probably isn't going to dispel much, if any, hatred some students may have for arguably the most hated department at Ball State University. But progress is progress - especially when dealing with the stubborn.
