New shoes can help a good cause

TOMS Shoes: One for One documentary is being shown by a group of Ball State University students who are hoping to spread the word about a worthy cause. The film will show viewers more about the cause and how to get involved. A promotional code for $5 off a purchase from TOMS shoes Web site will also be handed out to people at the event

When
Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Where
Art and Journalism Building Room 175

Who
A group of about five Ball State students are coordinating the event, and Alpha Kappa Psi, a coed business fraternity, is sponsoring
the event.

Why
About 40 percent of the world goes every day without shoes, according to the TOMS Web site. Since the organization began in 2006, TOMS has donated more than 150,000 pairs of shoes to people in need. TOMS goal is to raise that number to 300,000 by the end of 2009, the site said.

Senior Stephanie Bane has been involved in Ball State's support group for TOMS shoes since the beginning of the Fall Semester and created a Facebook group about Tuesday's event. She said this will be the group's first event of the semester and that she hopes to inspire more students to get involved in the cause through it.

"It's a really great opportunity for students to get involved," she said. "It's amazing to see what purchasing one pair of shoes can do for these children."

Last spring, a group of TOMS shoes representatives at Ball State created a Facebook group encouraging students to go a day without wearing shoes. The group had more than 500 confirmed participants.

Bane said the group is planning on recreating the event this Spring Semester but hasn't set a date yet.

What's next
The group will be hosting an event at Charlie's Library on Nov. 14. Bane said two local bands, Eight Stories High and Asteria, will be playing. Money collected from the cover charge will go to TOMS.
