Lauren Petersen said she knew this was her "Best Week Ever" when she was announced as Homecoming queen during Air Jam Thursday night.
"When they announced the top four for the homecoming court, I was so excited for all the girls that made it," she said. "We made really good friends, so I was really happy for each of them, but when they called my name I was really excited."
The junior urban planning major was nominated last semester by her residence hall, Baker/ Klipple, in Noyer Complex. She placed among the top 10 candidates after the fashion show two weeks ago. For the royalty show, Petersen and her partner Clayton Barns dressed as Carrie Prejean and Donald Trump.
Petersen said she was thankful for the support at the events from the floor residents who attended to cheer for her.
However, Petersen said her family supported her the most.
"They have been my rock," she said. "They always offer me commitment and support, and extraordinary love and strength, and I love them dearly."
After being selected as one of the top 10 candidates, Petersen attended several Homecoming week events, including the faculty/staff social, flag football and the Talent Search. She said she enjoyed getting to know the other candidates.
"It's great," she said. "You get to find where people's interests are, especially if they're representing their organizations, so it's really cool to get to know a whole different group of people."
In candidate interviews conducted last week, Petersen said she was asked about her transition from high school to college, what set her apart from the other candidates and the future of her career. She said she was excited to participate in all the Homecoming royalty events.
"It's so great to be celebrating Ball State and what we stand for, and meeting some of the great alumni," she said. "Just being there and seeing where people have gone, who they've become since they've been in Ball State, is going to be a great experience."
