PHILADELPHIA - Ball State University blocked a field goal for the first time in two years, but Temple University held its 10-0 lead headed into halftime.
The Cardinals stood strong after a holding penalty gave the Owls a first-and-goal at the two yard line. A pair of penalties forced Temple nearly out of the red zone before it attempted a 30-yard field goal. The kick was blocked at the line and returned to the Temple 40-yard line by cornerback Charlie Todd.
Ball State was unable to take advantage of their good field position, however. A personal foul on right tackle Austin Holtz killed any momentum the Cardinals might have been able to pick up.
At the end of the quarter, Ball State was driving, but Temple forced a turnover on a crazy play. Quarterback Kelly Page eluded a sack and threw downfield to Tori Gibson. The ball was tipped and Jaiquawn Jarrett caught the ball on Gibson's back at the three-yard line.
Temple was unable to get anything going offensively after the blocked kick. They were forced to punt twice in the quarter.
Page is 11-for-18 for 89 yards and an interception. Wide receiver Briggs Orsbon has six catches for 56 yards and MiQuale Lewis has 26 rushing yards.
The Owls are led by Vaughn Charlton, who is 12-for-18 for 108 yards and a touchdown. Running back Bernard Pierce has 51 yards on 10 carries.
