Coach Stan Parrish has said that Ball State University needs to relearn how to win. It looks like that's still a work in progress.
Ball State lost a wild game of anything you can do; I can do better in the final minute, 37-30 to the University of Toledo on Homecoming on Saturday at Scheumann Stadium.
The Cardinals took a one-point lead with 42 seconds left in the game after quarterback Kelly Page found Tori Gibson for a 10-yard touchdown and MiQuale Lewis converted a two-point conversion on a Statue of Liberty play.
Aaron Opelt and the Rockets answered right back. After a kickoff return to its 49-yard line, Opelt found wide receiver Stephen Williams for a 51-yard touchdown. Toledo converted on its two-point conversion to extend its lead to seven.
The Cardinals held a two-point lead going into the fourth quarter and extended it to eight points after MiQuale Lewis had a two-yard touchdown run. The score came after cornerback Charlie Todd returned an interception 57 yards to the four yard line.
But Ian McGarvey missed his first extra point since 2007, meaning the Rockets were one score behind still. Quarterback Aaron Opelt threw a 51-yard strike to Stephen Williams and then threw for the two-point conversion to tie the game with 6:18 left in the game.
Opelt would direct another Rockets' drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to tight end Tom Burzine for the game-winning score. It was Burzine's second touchdown of the game and the fourth for Opelt.
