Ball State's University Theatre continues to bring the 1960s back to Ball State with its performance of "Hair."

The show, which is centered around hippies, drugs and Vietnam War protests, sold out during its opening weekend, according to the University Theatre box office. Additional shows will be every night at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday at the University Theatre.

"We are expecting Friday and Saturday to also sell out and possibly even Thursday," university box office manager Kristin Ramsey said. "We see Tuesday and Wednesday coming close. There are plenty of seats available though."

"Hair" is a psychedelic experience that is set in New York City during the Vietnam era. The show centers around two young men who set out to burn their draft cards in an act of defiance and protest. From their rebellion emerged a ground-breaking musical theater performance. "Hair" features hits such as "Aquarius" and "Let the Sunshine In," both of which made it to the top 10 charts when the show first debuted on Broadway in 1968.

Ball State student Matt Stinnett saw the University Theatre's rendition of the show when it debuted last weekend.

"The music was great. I was pleasantly surprised by how good their singing was," Stinnett said.

Throughout the show, the audience is taken back to the 1960s and gets a chance to participate in the finale of the show.

Stinnett said he couldn't think of anything to criticize about the show and that it was his favorite show he's seen so far at Ball State.

"It was beautiful in every sense of the word," he said. "The actors were in touch with the content and performed really well."

"Hair" does contain some nudity and adult language, and posters promoting the musical have marketed it for mature audiences only.

"I knew [the nudity] was going to happen, but I wasn't sure what to expect," Stinnett said. "It was a nice compliment to that moment of the performance and I thought it was unique to this show."

Tickets for the performance are on sale now at the University Box Office. They cost $15.50 for the general public, $13.50 for faculty and staff, $11.50 for senior citizens and $10.50 for students. The box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
