OUR VIEW: We're awesome

AT ISSUE: Ball State has pulled in several accolades lately, and has put its name in the same group as other elite Indiana schools

The few square miles in Middletown that we're calling home for a few years have come a long way to distinguish themselves in the past few years.

In the past few years we've seen a few million bricks shape into state-of-the-art facilities, we're in the midst of seeing a few thousand holes drilled in the ground to become the first geothermal heating system of its size in the country and the university has received recognition for many of its academic programs.

The national exposure Ball State University got last year from the football team's success was great. But, as we're seeing now that was short lived and, once again, we're back to being one of the best kept academic secrets in the Midwest. And while football bragging rights are great, they aren't going to get you a job.

On the other hand, a line on your résumé boasting the education you got from a music program ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation may raise some eyebrows and help you get your foot in the door. Students in Ball State's School of Music can reap the benefits of that recognition for the second year in a row.

The David Letterman Communication and Media Building, the prize of the telecommunications department since its opening in 2007, won an Emmy for technical achievement earlier this month. Not that it needed vindication, but now the department can add another trophy to the case in the hall outside the room with the caliber equipment one would see in the top professional facilities in the world.

Pretty much we're trying to tell you this campus is awesome. We could use so many more programs as examples. We have access to more training and equipment than many people could dream of. There's certainly more than we could mention here.

Granted, we aren't on a coast and we aren't in the Ivy League. Some places may not hire you based on the name of the school you have on your diploma. But you have so much at your disposal. By the time you graduate you will have had the chance to put yourself at an advantage over so many other people in your field who graduate the same time you do.

Whether you take that chance is up to you, of course. But it would be pretty embarrassing if, while in a job interview, you were asked about your experience with the things Ball State has to offer and you had nothing to say.
