FOOTBALL: Motor City Bowl runs completely out of gas

A declining auto industry has caused Detroit automakers to drop their sponsorship of the Motor City Bowl, as Little Caesars Pizza has officially taken over.

The bowl was renamed Wednesday as the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

The former Motor City Bowl typically features the Mid-American Conference champions versus a bowl-eligible team from the Big Ten.

The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl will be played for the 13th straight year on Dec. 26 at Detroit's Ford Field - home of the NFL's Detroit Lions. Little Caesars announced it would have a variety of promotions surrounding the game, including a special "Hot-N-READY" pizza offer on game day.

The bowl was previously sponsored jointly by Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. Chrysler pulled its sponsorship last year, and GM dropped this year. Ford will remain a partial sponsor of the bowl, but terms are still being discussed. Last season, Florida Atlantic University defeated Central Michigan University 24-21. 2008 MAC champion University at Buffalo - which defeated Ball State University in the championship game at Ford Field - opted to play in the International Bowl against the University of Connecticut. The Huskies defeated the Bulls 38-20.
