If you've been in Muncie long enough, you've heard of Concannon's. The large, plain white box full of donuts is easily recognized.
In January of this year, Concannon's opened a second location, expanding a family business of 50 years. The new location goes beyond the bakery sweets of the original location downtown at 620 N. Walnut St.
From the parking lot, the sweet smell of fresh donuts filled the air. The smell became even sweeter as the door opened. On the right side of the building is a full bakery. Shelves are filled with colorful popcorns, while deli cases display dozens of donuts, cakes and other sweets. The left side of the building is where the café is located.
AtmosphereConcannon's has a welcoming hometown feel when you walk in. The café has wooden tables and chairs that are far enough apart to have privacy but close enough together to make friends with the people sitting next to you. The coffee bar has an antique, old time feel.
Behind the counter is a large menu, but smaller paper ones are offered as well. The employees taking your order are more than friendly and will even offer some suggestions if you are having trouble making a decision. The food is prepared to order and brought to the table.
Food I ordered a sandwich that caught my eye as being unique. It was roast beef with pepper jack cheese, cole slaw and a horseradish sauce on wheat. The sweet cole slaw offset the spice from the cheese and horseradish perfectly. My friend ordered the chicken salad sandwich. It had cranberries and walnuts and was served on a croissant. Both sandwiches were served with a cookie. From his expression as he ate, I would say he very much enjoyed his meal.
As we ate our meals and washed them down with fresh iced tea, an employee came around with a tray of flavored coffee samples. I tried the toffee coffee. It was sweet but not too sweet, definitely something I would order some time in the future.
Concannon's serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. The café serves anything from salads to sandwichs to ice cream.
Price My sandwich and large iced tea came to $8.30. There wasn't a meal for over $10 on the menu. Concannon's offered top quality, fresh food at very reasonable prices. 4/5 stars
