One game into its season, the Ball State University field hockey team is already one win away from matching last season's win total.
After finishing the 2008 season 2-17, Ball State defeated Davidson College 2-1 in its season opener on Saturday in North Carolina.
With game tied at one, forward Hannah Jones scored the game-winning goal on a rebound 11 minutes into the second half. As a junior, this was Jones' third career goal and her first game-winning goal.
Ball State out-shot Davidson 10-8 and forward Brooke MacGillivary had a game-high four shots.
MacGillivary opened the scoring with a goal at 18:29 to give Ball State a 1-0 lead. The lead would last for less than one-minute as Davidson's Ellie Szykowny would score to tie the game.
In the win, goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett had a game-high five saves.
This was the second consecutive season Ball State defeated Davidson.
The Cardinals beat Wildcats 2-0 in their second game of the 2008 season. Following that win, Ball State had a program-worst 11 game losing streak before winning a conference game against Missouri State University in October.
Ball State's next game will be against Appalachian State University at 11 a.m. Sunday in North Carolina. If the Cardinals win this game it will match their win total from the entire 2008 season.
