OUR VIEW: Just go for it, take an adventure

AT ISSUE: Ball State students should take time now to pursue adventures they always wanted to do

It is a crazy idea.

We all have them and hope they come true one day. At some point in everyone's life, a thought pops into your head about doing something completely out of the ordinary at some point in your life.

Ball State University graduate student Jason Glassburn had his and he's now living the thought out - spending his summer and fall walking from coast-to-coast across the United States.

Glassburn is partly doing this walk to raise money and awareness for the Free the Slaves organization. However, there is an underlying reason for this journey of doing something adventurous, which everyone can relate to in some way.

Whether it is your dream to travel across the country, live abroad for a extended period, be on a reality show or go skydiving, everyone has some type of little or big adventure they want to experience in their life.

It is easy to push off these types of adventures now and think you can do them when you are older and maybe more financially secure. The simple fact, though, is it is even tougher to do these things when you are older.

Most college students have big responsibilities - classes, work, paying rent and finding ways to afford school. However, these responsibilities sometimes do not even come close to measuring up against the responsibilities a person has after they settle down and start a family.

The amount of responsibility continues to increase throughout life and this time right now may be the most ideal time for these adventures.

Glassburn realized this. That is why he started this adventure now before entering the "real world" when he would have more responsibilities.

There are always reasons, and sometimes very valid ones, to not pursue these individual adventures. These reasons can go away, but they are just as easily replaced by new reasons not to do these individual dreams. One of the last things an individual wants to have happen, though, is look back later on in life and regret not seizing the opportunity to live out one of their dreams.

The thrill of an adventure is something that can drive an individual to do incredible - and at times really far out there - things. It can also give people the energy and will to overcome these doubts and find ways to make the adventures possible.

Not everyone has the desire that Glassburn has to walk across America. However, we all have an adventure or dream we want to pursue and, to Glassburn's credit, he is realizing his right now.
