MEN'S GOLF: Former Ball State golfer Maurer back in contention at Indiana Open after shooting round-best 66

After posting the best third-round score, former Ball State University men's golfer Brian Maurer is back in contention for a top-five finish at the Indiana Open Championship.

Maurer shot a 6-under-par 66 Thursday in the Indianapolis tournament and is now tied for eighth place with a 3-under-par.

Having graduated from Ball State in May, Maurer entered the day out of the top 20 with a 3-over-par. After Thursday's performance, he is 10 shots behind the tournament's leader Erich Johnston from Purdue University.

In four seasons with the Cardinals, Maurer was named the team MVP twice. The 2008-09 senior captain also lead Ball State with four top-10 finishes and averaged a team-best 73.58 per round last season.

Maurer is tied with four players for eighth place, including former Ball State golfer Jamie Broce. Broce - the 1999 Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Year - shot a 1-under-par in the third-round to move up seven spots.

In addition to Maurer and Broce, three current Ball State golfers competed in the third round after making the cut following Wednesday's second round.

Senior Ross Cosat and junior Eric Skillman are tied for 29th place at 3-over-par. Both players shot a 1-under-par in the third round.

Junior Eric Steger shot a 5-over-par in the third round to move down into a tie for 53rd place at 7-over-par.

The final round of the Indiana Open Championship will begin Friday morning.
