MEN'S GOLF: Ball State alumnus 2 shots off lead at Indiana Open Championship

After the first round of play at the Indiana Open Championship, a former member of the Ball State University men's golf team is in the top five.

Alumnus Brian Sears shot a 4-under-par 68 in Tuesday's opening round at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis and is tied for fifth place.

Sears, who played for Ball State during the 1979-80 season, is two shots behind the first-round leader Andy Winings from Brownsburg, Ind.

More than 25 former or current Ball State golfers are participating in this tournament.

Sophomore T.J. Carpenter leads all current Ball State golfers with a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for 17th place. As a freshman last season, Carpenter played in five rounds and averaged a 76.80 per round - the eighth best average on the team.

Incoming freshman Brodie Williams, sophomore Eric Steger and senior Ross Cosat each shot a 2-over-par 74 and are tied for 62nd place.

The second round of the 72-hole tournament is scheduled to be played Wednesday. Following this round, cuts will be made for the final two rounds.
