FOOTBALL: Incoming freshman helps USA win gold

Offensive lineman helps team beat 1st seeded Canadians

In three games during the Junior World Championships, Team USA did not allow a point until the championship game against the team from Canada. Despite allowing the Canadians to score, Team USA still won the World Championships 41-3.

For the tournament, Team USA outscored its opponents 174-3 over the course of three games.

The Americans were lead by quarterback Bryce Petty who will be an incoming freshman this season at Baylor University. Petty completed all 14 of his passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns, which was good enough for a quarterback rating of 284.

For the game, the Americans had 408 total yards of offense, compared to 49 for the Canadians. Team USA's defense once again did not allow their opponents to run for positive yardage on the day, pushing team Canada back to -8 yards rushing. For the entire championships, Team USA allowed -67 yards of rushing and 158 yards of passing, for 91 net yards for the entire championship.

Ball State University incoming freshman Matt Page and the rest of the USA's offensive line was responsible for helping the team to 408 total yards but allowed three sacks in the contest.

Despite the success of Team USA, head coach Chuck Kyle said in a press release that his team was not as stacked as the scoreboard may have shown.

"I am going to look you in the eye and tell you until the day I die this is not an all-star team," Kyle said. "This was a team that had about a week-and-half to two weeks to get ready for our first game. Kids came from all over America. They came together for the love of the game of football and for the love of their country."

Despite coming into the championship as the number one seed, Team Canada coach Glen Constantin said in a press release he knew his team would not have an easy road to winning the championship.

"We understood we were going against a Division I (college) football team in the making," Constantin said. "There's no doubt, they are what we are in hockey. It's a good measuring stick for everyone."

Team USA will now split and go their separate ways and begin training at different universities from across the country. Even though some of the players will be going to the same schools and others to rival school, Kyle said what happened to this him and this team in the four weeks since they arrived in Canton, Ohio has changed them all forever.

"This was very special," Kyle said. "Medals and trophies, where do they put them? They put them in a trophy case and you hang a medal up somewhere, right? What stays are the memories and the friendships."
