The Ball State University Board of Trustees will have a new member for the next two years.
Nicole Vauter was appointed Tuesday afternoon by Gov. Mitch Daniels as the university's student trustee.
"It is going to be an awesome learning experience," Vauter said. "Overall that is what I'm excited about, the opportunity learn everything there is to offer from the board." Vauter, a junior finance and economics major, will begin her position immediately and serve a two-year term. Prior to this appointment, she was an undergraduate fellow in the Miller College of Business and a member of the student alumni relations team.
The search to replace former student trustee Kellie Conrad, who graduated in May, started about five months ago with more than 10 students applying for the position. Vauter said she first learned about the student trustee opening at a student alumni relations team meeting from Ebony Strong, former Student Government Association secretary and member of the selection committee.
Following an interview with the selection committee in March, Vauter was ranked a top candidate for the position. She then was one of three candidates to be invited to interview with Daniels in June.
"It was pretty crazy," she said. "That interview with the governor was the most nervous I've been in a long time."
The Board of Trustees is comprised of nine members, including one student trustee. This is also Ball State's only state-mandated student position.
The biggest thing Vauter said she wants to accomplish during her two-year term is be good liaison between the administration and students.
"I'm very opened minded and communicate with people effectively," she said. "I want to follow in Kellie's footsteps and make sure the student voices are heard."
