Construction vehicle at Ball State goes up in flames

Truck carrying asphalt, propane tank catches on fire Wednesday morning

Traffic and construction near Kinghorn Hall were halted Wednesday morning after an truck carrying asphalt burst into flames.

Although the official report of the incident wasn't available as of Wednesday night, Gene Burton, director of public safety at Ball State University, said the fire was caused by a propane tank that was on the back of the truck.

"Something went wrong," he said. "The truck was engulfed in flames."

Burton said the fire was reported at 11:50 a.m. by an officer who was patrolling the area.

The Muncie fire department was called and quickly extinguished the fire, he said. Nobody was injured during the incident, but the truck suffered extensive damage.

Burton said the drive where the vehicle was parked also had superficial damage that will be repaired today.

The situation was resolved by 12:13 p.m. and traffic resumed as normal, Burton said.

Despite the numerous construction sites at Ball State, Burton said accidents like this one are rare and campus police are taking no additional precautions against them.
